How
To Eat An Elephant
Question: How do you eat
an elephant?
Answer: One bite at a
time.
Lesson
--- "The most difficult
task to complete is the
one you never start."
Summary
--- This particular lesson
about eating an elephant
is so important because
life can be a gigantic
elephant for many of us.
If you wanted to eat an
elephant right now, would
you be able to just walk
up and put the entire
elephant in your mouth?
Of course not! As you
think about each moment
of your day, I am asking
you to make them bite-sized
portions. Take your time.
Eat the elephant one bite
at a time and create success
for yourself. Figure out
what you can do and do
that. Don't focus on the
wedding on your first
date. That is too much
pressure of you. If you
are running the marathon
next year, there would
be no need to be concerned
with how many miles you
are going to run today,
right? What you need to
be concerned about is
taking the first step,
which may be getting out
flirting and meeting a
few people. Similarly,
it might be getting on
the treadmill today, for
however long you can stay
on the treadmill (even
if it's only one or two
minutes). If cleaning
your room is a difficult
task for you, then get
a timer, set it for 30
minutes and clean a portion
of it. Do not think about
the entire room…
think about a section
of it. Walk in and say,
"Let me clean this
drawer." Do not try
to clean all 12 drawers
in your dresser at once.
Focus on one at a time.
Now, what's interesting
is that once you start,
you have achieved a win!
Later, after several starts,
the adrenaline begins
to flow, and you're able
to clean all the drawers,
to run the marathon, to
do all of those things,
because you have had a
few checks in the "Win"
column.
Saint Frances of Assisi
encouraged: "Start
by doing what's necessary,
then do what's possible
and suddenly you are doing
the impossible."
I know that you can do
the impossible because
you wouldn't be reading
this if you didn't know
how many resources are
available to you, how
powerful you are, and
what you have to offer.
As people we are already
great, and finding ways
we can become greater.
That is really what it
means to Move Out
of Your Own Way…you
being better!
Action --- Let
"One Day" Start
Today
Define a particular project
or goal you would like
to complete. What is it
that you need to get done,
or what is it that you
are allowing to overwhelm
you? Think about it, write
it down. Develop a simple
action plan. Get a process
and take the first small
step. Figure out today,
right now, how you can
get one thing
done, one day at a time.
